Oily skin requires a skin-care regimen that helps combat excess oil and shine without removing too much natural oil from the skin. While it’s tempting to wash oily skin frequently, doing so can dry out your skin, causing redness and irritation. Many commercial products are available to combat oily skin issues, but they contain chemicals that can irritate the skin. You can make skin-care products for oily skin at home, which provides the opportunity to know what ingredients are going into your skin-care products.

  1. Stir 1 tsp. each of lemon juice and yogurt together in a bowl.
  2. Grind 1 tsp. dried oats in a food processor until they are powdery. Mix the oat powder into the lemon juice and yogurt. The oats add an exfoliating component to the oily skin facial cleanser.
  3. Massage the oily skin cleanser into your face and rinse off with warm water. Use daily to wash oily skin.
  1. Combine olive oil, lemon juice and one egg white in a bowl. Mix the ingredients with an electric hand mixer until they are frothy.
  2. Massage the moisturizer into the skin of the face and neck. Leave the olive oil moisturizer on the skin for 15 minutes.
  3. Splash warm water on the face to wash off the moisturizer. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel. Olive oil moisturizes the skin, while the lemon juice and egg white work to tighten oily skin and cleanse the skin of excess surface oils.

Whether you are a male or female, proper skin care is important. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and our oil glands become less active. This means wrinkles and dry skin can occur. As the skin becomes more fragile it becomes susceptible to sun damage and skin disorders. The Mayo Clinic lists four things that can be done to properly care for the skin and to keep that youthful glow as long as possible. Sun ProtectionThe Mayo Clinic states the most important thing that a person can do for their skin is to protect it from the sun. Sun exposure damages the skin and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. It also ages the skin and makes wrinkles more prominent. People should avoid the sun during its peak hours — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — and if they do have to get out in the sun they should wear a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor that is 15 or greater. Sunscreen should be applied at least 20-30 minutes prior to going outside and it should be reapplied after being in the water or sweating.

SmokingPeople who want to treat their skin properly should not smoke. The Mayo Clinic reports that changes occur in the skin of smokers after ten years of smoking. The report also states that smoking makes blood vessels narrow, depletes the skin of nutrients and oxygen and decreases blood flow to the skin. All of this damages collagen and elastin — what gives our skin elasticity and strength. Smoking also produces lines and wrinkles around the mouth. These lines and wrinkles are a direct result of pursing the lips around cigarettes.

WashingA lot of people really don’t know how to wash their skin. They think taking long showers and baths is good for them when it’s really not. The Mayo Clinic advises that people bathe for no longer than 15 minutes as long baths and showers remove too much oil from the skin. They also advise that people use warm water versus hot water and to avoid soaps that are too strong and ones that contain additives such as perfumes and dyes. They recommend mild soaps such as Dove and Cetaphil. After the bath or shower the skin should be patted dry, not rubbed dry.

MoisturizeEvery person’s skin is different, yet most can benefit from a daily moisturizer. The Mayo Clinic recommends that people wait 20 minutes after having a shower or bath to gauge whether a moisturizer should be applied. If the skin is tight and feels dry after this time, apply a skin moisturizer. The best moisturizers will contain sunscreen and be low on perfumes, dyes and other additives.

The olive tree is an evergreen tree in the Mediterranean region. The tree grows to 9 meters tall and takes 15 years to bear fruit. Using olive oil externally on your body can also have benefits. Olive oil is now found in many skin care products. The vitamin E found in the olive oil is the key ingredient.

Step 2:For hair care, add 1 tbsp. of olive oil to your hair conditioner. Shake well before each use. Use conditioner as usual. Olive oil will provide not only a beautiful shine, but also manageability.

Step 3:Olive oil can also help with the area around your eyes. Nightly, place a small amount of oil on your fingertips. Gently dab on the corner of your eyes, your eyelids and under your eyes. Use caution not to get the oil in your eyes. You can also do this to your eyebrows after tweezing or waxing to provide moisture and soothing relief.

Step 4:For lip care, place a small amount of oil on your fingertips. Rub across your lips to provide moisture and shine.

Step 5:Similarly, take a small amount nightly and rub into your nails and cuticles. This will give a beautiful shine to your nails and keep the nail beds and cuticles soft. Make a sugar scrub and use it on your hands nightly to keep hands hydrated and soft.

Step 6:For foot care, use 1 tbsp. of olive oil in a warm footbath. Soak for 10 minutes, then pat dry. You can also use sugar scrub on your feet daily.

You probably use lemons as flavoring in your food and drinks all the time, but if you’re like most people, you’ve never thought about using them as a natural skin care and beauty treatment. Lemons won’t fix your skin overnight, but they can help treat certain problems and may even help prevent serious skin conditions. Using lemon juice topically for a short period of time doesn’t have long term side effects, either.

  • Like smearing toothpaste on pimples, lemon juice is sometimes mentioned as a quick home remedy for getting rid of acne. Unfortunately, there’s little evidence that lemon juice can really make acne vanish overnight. However, lemon juice can help lighten acne scars if used sparingly. Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to areas of acne scarring with a cotton swab or pad in the evening after washing with a mild facial cleanser. Avoid getting lemon juice on the rest of your skin – it can be very drying.
  • Lemon juice is a natural antiseptic. When lemon juice is used as part of a facial mask, it can help to clear dirt and bacteria on the surface of your skin that can cause pimples and breakouts. Oleda Baker, author of “29 Forever” suggests making a mask from fresh lemon juice and chilled oatmeal. To make the mask, combine 1 cup of cooked, chilled oatmeal with 2 tablespoons of freshly-squeezed lemon juice in a small bowl. Apply the mask to clean skin and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the mask off with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Baker recommends using the mask once per week or less. If the lemon juice mask is too drying for your skin, use it once every 10 days to 2 weeks instead.
  • Lemon peel, when added to hot black tea may protect your body from skin cancer according to BBC News. Researchers Iman Hakim and Robin Harris of the University of Arizona found that people that drank hot tea with lemon peel had a 70 percent reduced risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma. Study participants that drank hot black tea without lemon peel only had a 40 percent reduced risk. Drinking tea regularly may also help reduce the risk sunburn too, but more research needs to be conducted in this area.
  • Lemon essential oil produced through the vapor distillation process can be used on the skin to help rejuvenate dull skin according to Barbara Close, author of “Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics.” According to Close, the best way to use lemon essential oil on your skin is to mix 1 part lemon essential oil and 10 parts natural carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil. Apply the mixture to clean skin in the evening. Close also recommends limiting sun exposure while you’re using lemon essential oil topically, because it may increase photosensitivity.

Skin care therapists work in spas, salons, and doctors offices handling tasks such as massage and treatment of the skin for either health or beauty purposes. An individual interested in becoming a skin care therapist can take advantage of a variety of training programs. A skin care therapist is also known as an esthetician or facialist.

  • A skin care therapist handles many different skin treatments, including chemical peels, facials, hand and foot treatments, and exfoliation of the skin and hair removal. She helps clients treat skin disorders including rosacea, sun damage, wrinkles, acne and dehydration. After evaluating a client’s skin, the therapist helps the client prepare a skin care regimen and select products such as cleansers and face and body creams. She may also keep records of her clients’ preferences and results from treatments so that she can provide personalized service to her clients on subsequent visits.

A person with one year of experience can hope to earn as much as $40,000, but having 10 or 15 years experience can bring in $50,000 potentially.

Many women are interested in making their own skin care products from natural ingredients. This is because there’s a rising interest in organics. Here’s how you join the trend and make natural skin care products at home.

  1. Create an almond milk natural cleanser for oily skin. Combine 2 tsp. almond meal with 5 fl. oz. water, and whip the mixture in a blender for 2 minutes. Strain the whipped mixture through cheesecloth to make it smooth, and store your almond milk cleanser in a bottle. Apply the product to your face and wipe it off with soft tissues daily.
  2. Make a honey cleanser, which is appropriate for any skin type. Mix together 1 tsp. honey and 2 tbsp. warm milk. Rub this thin lotion over your face and neck, and massage it with your fingertips. Then, rinse off the cleanser.
  3. Wash with an olive oil cleanser by combining 2 tsp. olive oil and 1 tsp. honey. Apply the product to your face and neck, and wash it off.
  4. Design a lotion to enhance your complexion. Blend together 2 tbsp. almond meal and 5 fl. oz. water for 2 minutes. Pour the mixture into a non-metal pan, add 24 violet flowers and heat gently. Allow the natural lotion to cool, then strain and bottle it.
  5. Use a natural pimple remedy. Take an orange calendula marigold petal and squeeze it between your fingers, causing it to bruise. Hold the bruised petal to your pimple for 2 minutes, and the spot heals overnight.
  6. Concoct a conditioning body mask that’s suitable for all skin types. Combine the following ingredients in a blender: 2 tbsp. half-and-half, ½ cup chopped pumpkin flesh, 2 tsp. honey, 2 egg whites, ½ a peach (with skin) and 1/8 tsp. instant coffee. Mix on a low-medium setting for 45 seconds, and spread the mask on your skin. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse off this skin care product with warm water.

If you have skin that gets red or breaks out when using new skin care products, you may have sensitive skin. When you try a new product, use a skin patch test to determine if it will irritate your skin. If your skin becomes red, chances are your skin reacted to an ingredient in the product. Before spreading products of the face and body, take the time to test them out first. A skin patch test is easy to do at home, and should be done with each new skincare product you try.

  1. Apply a small dab of the skin care product to either the inside wrist or inside elbow. Rub it into the skin thoroughly. Keep the test area small, just in case there is a negative reaction to the product.
  2. Allow the product to sit on the skin for at least 24 hours. Avoid taking a shower within the 24 hour period, since you don’t want to wash off the product.
  3. Check throughout the 24 hour period for redness, burning, swelling or any soreness to the skin patch area. If you do have these symptoms, gently rub off the skin care product using cool water only. Pat the area dry with a towel.
  4. Look at the test patch area when the 24 hours are up. If there was no skin reaction, the product is safe to use on your body or face.
