It is important to pay gentle attention to your skin and know the best products to use on it. You need to know whether your skin is normal, dry, oily or a combination. There are dozens of theories about the best way to wash your face, but there are a couple of ways that may work best for you, such as washing daily with a gentle cleanser or exfoliating with a scrub.
- Washing your face dissolves dirt, makeup and oils from the environment and particles that have made contact with your face. It also unclogs pores and removes dead skin. You should wash your face at least once daily to help keep your skin clean, unclogged and to prevent acne. This goes hand in hand with using the correct cleanser for your face. Get a cleanser that corresponds with your skin type. Darker skins are usually more dry and oily then lighter hues.
- If you have dry skin, creamy cleansers with moisturizers or oil are ideal. For oily skin, avoid cleansers with cream, oils or moisturizers, and opt for a gel cleanser. For normal skin, choose a gentle, nutrient-rich cleanser, and for combination skin, find a cleanser that has an equal balance of moisturizing and cleansing ingredients. Don’t use bar soap because that will dry out your skin too much, no matter what skin type you have.
- Before washing your face, clean your hands with an antibacterial soap to remove grease and germs that you don’t want on your face, then remove any makeup with makeup remover. Turn the water to warm–not hot–and lightly splash it on your face. Apply about a dime-size dollop of cleanser onto the tips of your fingers. Transfer some to your other hand’s fingers, and then begin to massage the cleanser into your face with your fingertips. Rub in small circular motions, starting at the forehead, then working your way down to the nose and cheeks. Proceed down to the chin, jawline and neck, focusing on each area for about 30 seconds. This massage method works well because you are stimulating your circulation around your face. Wash your face like this once a night. Don’t over-cleanse your face because this can stimulate excess oil production. Wash off the cleanser with warm water, then use a clean towel to wipe off the water and residue. Each morning, rinse your face with clean warm water to remove oils that may have built up overnight.
- Exfoliation is a way to clean your face to keep it healthy and glowing. Exfoliate your face about once a week to remove the top layer of dead skin cells that may dull complexions. Use a store-bought gentle scrub with small grains or particles that can also provide added nutrients to your skin such as vitamin E and avocado extracts. Massage the exfoliating scrub on your face just as you used the cleanser. Wash off the exfoliating scrub with warm water, then wipe off any water and leftover residue with a clean towel.
